How much does Christmas light installation cost?

National cost guides put professional Christmas light installation at $220 to $684 for most homes, or about $2 to $7 per foot of roofline.

The short answer

Most homeowners pay somewhere between $220 and $684 to have Christmas lights professionally installed, with a national average of about $444, according to HomeAdvisor's 2026 cost guide. Fixr's guide lands in the same place: $250 to $650, averaging $450.

Those are national figures, not Tulsa quotes. The number on your quote depends mostly on two things: how many feet of roofline you want lit, and how high the installer has to climb to reach it.

How installers price it: by the foot

Roofline lighting is usually quoted per linear foot. The published ranges:

  • HomeAdvisor: $2.50 to $7 per linear foot for the full job, or $2 to $5 per foot for labor alone. If the installer supplies the lights, it adds roughly $0.50 to $2 per foot depending on the bulb.
  • Fixr: $2 to $5 per foot for materials and labor together, made up of about $1.50 to $3.50 in labor and $0.50 to $1.50 in light strands.

To estimate your own house, walk the edge of the roof you want lit and add up the feet. A ranch house with 120 feet of front and side eaves, at $3 to $5 per foot, comes out around $360 to $600 before trees, bushes or extras. That's arithmetic on the published ranges, not a quote.

Height and stories

Roof height is the biggest swing. Fixr puts high or hard-to-reach roofs, about 16 feet and up, at $3.50 to $6 per foot, or 20% to 25% over regular rates. HomeAdvisor uses the same rule of thumb: expect about 20% more for hard-to-reach areas, and says multi-story homes can reach $1,300.

Fixr's guide breaks it down by home size and stories:

Home size One story Two stories Three stories
1,500 sq. ft. $275 to $475 $425 to $630 $525 to $750
2,000 sq. ft. $315 to $500 $515 to $750 $630 to $875
2,400 sq. ft. $330 to $575 $525 to $825 $715 to $950
3,200 sq. ft. $350 to $600 $615 to $915 $775 to $1,000

Trees

Wrapping trees is priced separately, and size matters more than anything. Fixr lists labor at $75 to $125 for a tree about 6 feet tall, $125 to $250 for one 12 to 18 feet tall, and $300 to $1,500 for a large tree around 28 feet. The biggest trees can need a lift, which Fixr puts at $400 to $700 for a day. HomeAdvisor gives $75 to $200 for a small tree.

Whose lights they are

Some companies install lights you already own. Others supply the lights, either sold to you or rented for the season. Fixr lists rental packages, installed, at $200 to $600, and gives an example of about $550 for 150 feet of LED lights installed versus $375 for incandescent. HomeAdvisor's rental range is $250 to $600 for a basic setup with installation and takedown.

In Fixr's example, LED costs more up front. Running the display adds to the power bill: Fixr puts it at $5 to $75 a month, and HomeAdvisor gives the same range for a large incandescent display.

Takedown

Ask whether the price includes coming back to take everything down. HomeAdvisor says takedown is often included in the installation price. If it's billed separately, HomeAdvisor lists $100 to $400, or about $0.50 per foot, and Fixr lists $125 to $350 per project.

Outlets and timers

A roofline display needs power where the lights start. Fixr puts a new outdoor outlet at $120 to $200 from an electrician, and a timer at $12 to $50. If your house has no outlet near the eaves, that cost comes before any lights go up.

Permanent lights cost more

Permanent track lighting mounted under the eaves is a different product. HomeAdvisor puts it at an average of $3,500, and Fixr at $3,000 to $3,500, not counting any new outlets. Weigh that against what several years of seasonal installs would cost you.

Timing affects the price too

Fixr notes some companies offer 10% to 20% off for booking early. In Tulsa the average first freeze arrives November 3, according to the National Weather Service. Asking in October leaves room to get quotes, agree on a design and set a date before the cold sets in.

Common questions

How much does it cost per foot to have Christmas lights installed?

National cost guides put it at about $2 to $7 per linear foot. HomeAdvisor lists $2.50 to $7 for the full job and Fixr lists $2 to $5 for lights and labor together.

Does the installation price include taking the lights down?

Often, but not always. Ask before you sign. When takedown is billed on its own, HomeAdvisor lists $100 to $400 and Fixr lists $125 to $350.

Is it cheaper to rent lights or buy them?

Renting means the installer supplies the lights and keeps them after the season. Fixr lists rental packages at $200 to $600 installed. Buying adds the strands to your bill, about $0.50 to $2 per foot through HomeAdvisor's installers, but you keep the lights for next year and need a place to store them.

Why does a two-story house cost more?

Taller rooflines take longer ladders or a lift, more safety gear and more time. Fixr and HomeAdvisor both add about 20% for hard-to-reach roofs.

How much do permanent Christmas lights cost?

About $3,000 to $3,500 installed, according to Fixr and HomeAdvisor, plus any new outlets the house needs.
