How much does a retaining wall cost in the Tulsa area?
National cost guides put most retaining walls at $3,500 to $9,400, or about $20 to $53 per square foot of wall face, before permits and engineering.
· Tulsa, Bixby

The short answer
Most homeowners pay $3,500 to $9,400 for a professionally built retaining wall, with a national average of about $6,300, according to LawnStarter's October 2026 cost guide. Priced by size, that works out to $20 to $53 per square foot of wall face, averaging $33. HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide lands close: $3,190 to $9,196, averaging $6,078.
Those are national figures, not Tulsa quotes. The number on your quote depends on three things more than any other: how big the wall face is, what it's made of, and whether it's tall enough to need reinforcement and an engineer.
How walls are priced
Most cost guides price a wall by the square foot of its face: length times height. A wall 30 feet long and 3 feet tall has a 90-square-foot face. At LawnStarter's $20 to $53 per square foot, that comes out around $1,800 to $4,800. That's arithmetic on a published range, not a quote.
Some contractors quote by the linear foot instead, which hides the height inside the number. Fixr's table shows why height matters so much. For a 25-foot wall:
| Wall height | Fixr's range, 25 feet long |
|---|---|
| 2 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 4 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 6 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
Doubling the height roughly doubles the price, before reinforcement. Fixr's example project, a 25-foot concrete block wall 4 feet tall on a reinforced concrete footing, averages $5,463.
When you compare quotes, check that they measure the same wall. The block below the ground costs money too. Allan Block, a block manufacturer, sets the trench at 6 inches deep plus 1 inch for every foot of wall height, with the first course buried in it.
What the wall is made of
Material changes the price per square foot. LawnStarter's ranges, installed:
- Wood: $13 to $35
- Interlocking blocks: $15 to $35
- Landscape blocks: $15 to $60
- Brick: $17 to $43
- Poured concrete: $20 to $40
- Natural stone: $20 to $90

Fixr's ranges run in the same territory, with concrete blocks at $30 to $50 per square foot and stone at $20 to $100. Segmental block, the stacked concrete units most backyard walls use, comes in at $15 to $35 per square foot in Fixr's guide.
What pushes the price up

Height, reinforcement and an engineer
Short walls hold back soil with their own weight. Taller ones need help. LawnStarter says walls over 4 feet need reinforcement and puts rebar at $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot.
Soil decides where that line falls. Allan Block's chart for one of its block lines, with level ground above the wall, shows an unreinforced wall topping out around 3 feet 2 inches in clay, against about 4 feet 7 inches in silty sand. A wall that would stand on its own in sandy soil can need reinforcement in clay at the same height.
HomeAdvisor puts a structural engineer for a wall over 4 feet at $350 to $750.
Drainage
Water behind a wall is what pushes most walls over, so drainage belongs in the price. Allan Block calls for 12 inches of wall rock behind the block, and requires a drain pipe for any reinforced wall, any gravity wall over 4 feet and any site with poor drainage.
Digging, grading and access
LawnStarter lists excavation at $50 to $200 per cubic yard and grading at $500 or more. A wall cut into a steep slope moves more soil than one built on nearly flat ground. Tight backyards with no room for equipment take more hand work.
Tearing out an old wall
Replacing a failed wall adds demolition. Fixr lists removal at $10 to $20 per square foot, with disposal adding $20 to $30 per square foot.
Permits in Tulsa and Bixby
In the City of Tulsa, the January 2025 residential guidelines say a retaining wall up to 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, needs a zoning clearance permit. Taller walls need a building permit and a design sealed by an engineer. The permit submittal asks for a site plan, a grading and drainage plan and an erosion control plan, so a taller wall carries paperwork costs before any block is ordered. Tulsa bases the building permit fee on the construction value set by its plans examiner.
Bixby's fee schedule, updated July 1, 2026, lists a retaining wall permit at $55.
National guides give wide permit ranges: LawnStarter lists $40 to $450 and Fixr $25 to $100. The retaining wall permit guide covers each town's rules.
Repair or replace?
A leaning or cracked wall doesn't always need rebuilding. Fixr puts most retaining wall repairs at $250 to $1,250, averaging $750. Fixing a leaning wall runs $250 to $1,500, and cracks $150 to $400. A wall that's moving because it has no drainage behind it usually needs to come apart, since the fix sits behind the block.
Common questions
How much does a retaining wall cost per square foot?
National cost guides put a professionally built wall at about $20 to $53 per square foot of wall face, averaging $33, according to LawnStarter. Material moves it most: wood starts near $13, natural stone can reach $90.
How much does a 4-foot retaining wall cost?
Fixr's guide puts a 25-foot wall 4 feet tall at $2,000 to $6,000, and its example concrete block wall of that size on a reinforced footing averages $5,463. In Tulsa, a wall over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing also needs a building permit and an engineer's sealed design.
Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall, and what does it cost?
In the City of Tulsa, walls over 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing need a design sealed by an engineer. HomeAdvisor puts a structural engineer for that kind of wall at $350 to $750.
Is it cheaper to repair a retaining wall than replace it?
Usually, if the wall has only shifted or cracked. Fixr puts most repairs at $250 to $1,250. A wall that failed because water has nowhere to go behind it often has to be rebuilt with drainage stone and a drain pipe.
Why do two retaining wall quotes differ so much?
They may not include the same work. Compare the wall height measured from the footing, the depth of the buried course, the drainage stone and pipe, any reinforcement, the permit and the haul-off of old material.
